New York
New York City Giiiiiiiirl
January 21st, 2010 by Angela
Sometimes I feel like my previous life never existed, that I've always lived in New York, known the people that I know, done the things that I do but nope, there was a time when all I did was sit in a terraced maisonette in Deepest, Darkest Surburbia in my PJs, watching Come Dine With Me.

Today I wrote a list of all the things I do in New York that I never did in London...

1. Run. No, really. I bought running shoes, a sports bra, everything. I'm not a proper runner yet though, I can't work out what to do with my iPod. And I fall over after a mile.

2. Lady Maintenance. It's not like I was walking round London like a shriveled yeti but I wasn't taking care of myself the way I do here. I wax various parts of myself whether I'm going to be wearing a bathing suit or not, I get semi-regular facials and mani/pedis are literally a way of life. It's strange. I likes it. And cough, the boy doesn't seem to be against the waxing. Owwowowowowoww.

3. I never stay in. Honestly, a night on the sofa with Buffy rereuns is officially a treat these days. Most nights, it's just watching a local band with Alex, a casual drink at one of our local bars with Jenny or a quick bite to eat (followed by a casual drink at one of our local bars) but honestly, I'm out All The Time. Which leads us on to...

4. I never cook. Honest injun, I used to be a great cook. There wasn't very much I couldn't turn my hand to but wow, pasta and Ragu would be a chore now. We don't have a toaster or a microwave in our apartment, grocery shopping here is SO expensive whereas dining out is relatively inexpensive and there are always leftovers that a lovely man will wrap up for you to take home. To eat after you've had a casual drink at a local bar.

5. I make friends. Maybe this has more to do with the me never leaving the house part but I feel like I make a new friend every week in NYC. People are genuinely friendly and interested in talking to you, wherever you go. And even awkward old English me has met the most amazing people that I would never have spoken to at home. Mostly because the London versions of these people would be far too cool to speak to me whereas in Noo Yoik, I get to play the Brit card and am cool by default. Brillbags.

Of course there are things I miss. Mostly Come Dine With Me. And Percy Pigs. And Celebrity Come Dine With Me. Don't you just love Come Dine with Me?
